A Natural Solution: How Microbes Transform Wastewater Treatment

At ClearBlu Environmental, we’re redefining wastewater treatment by turning to one of nature’s most powerful tools: microbes. These microscopic organisms are the key to reducing costs, increasing efficiency, and protecting our planet.

ClearBlu Microbes are a highly concentrated mixture of spores and vegetative bacteria. The main product we offer is our six Bascillus strains. For wastewater that is high in FOG (fats, oils, and grease) we sometimes offer a mixture of six patented Bacillus bacteria combined with two Pseudomonas species providing a diverse enzyme blend.

The bacteria offered by ClearBlu are non-pathogenic and non-hazardous.

Here’s a summary of what we’ll cover in this article:

Microbes- Nature’s Key to Clean Water

Microbes, or microorganisms, are tiny living organisms that are so small they can only be seen under a microscope. They include bacteria, viruses, fungi, archaea, and protists, and they exist virtually everywhere—in soil, water, air, and even inside other organisms.

While some microbes cause disease, many are beneficial, playing critical roles in processes like decomposition, fermentation, and nutrient cycling.

Microbes break down organic matter in wastewater through biological processes that convert complex organic compounds into simpler substances. Bacteria are the primary drivers, consuming organic material as food and metabolizing it into carbon dioxide, water, and biomass.

This process, often enhanced in treatment systems like activated sludge or biofilters, reduces pollutants and prepares the water for further treatment or safe discharge.

Microbes have an impressive ability to reduce contaminants by using them as sources of energy and nutrients. In wastewater treatment, they break down pollutants like organic waste, oils, and even certain chemicals, converting these contaminants into less harmful byproducts such as carbon dioxide, water, and nitrogen gas.

This microbial action not only purifies water but also helps minimize environmental pollution, making them vital for sustainable and effective wastewater management.

The ClearBlu Advantage

ClearBlu’s approach to microbial wastewater treatment offers some key advantages:

Enhanced System Efficiency: By optimizing microbial populations, ClearBlu helps wastewater systems operate more efficiently, reducing maintenance needs and costs.

Compliance Support: Their approach helps clients meet stringent wastewater discharge regulations, ensuring environmental compliance.

Customized Microbial Solutions: ClearBlu provides tailored microbial blends to target specific contaminants, ensuring efficient and effective treatment for unique wastewater challenges.

Natural and Sustainable: Their solutions rely on enhancing natural microbial activity, reducing the need for harsh chemicals and minimizing environmental impact.

Odor Control: ClearBlu’s microbial treatments effectively reduce odors by breaking down organic matter and preventing the buildup of volatile compounds.

Focus on Resource Recovery: ClearBlu’s microbial processes often support the recovery of water and nutrients, aligning with sustainable water management practices.

Our Microbe Products

ClearBlu Environmental offers three distinct microbial products to address a variety of wastewater treatment needs: Aquaculture Tables, Dry Microbes, and Liquid Microbes.

The Aquaculture Tablets are innovative slow-release microbial blocks that provide long-term treatment for lagoons, tanks, and retention ponds by continuously introducing beneficial microbes to reduce organic solids and improve water clarity. These tablets are useful for digesting organic sludge from the bottom of ponds.

Dry Microbes are highly concentrated powdered blends designed for ease of storage and transport, ideal for industries needing customizable doses to target fats, oils, grease, and other contaminants. The dry microbes are typically dosed by hand using a cup or a scoop.

Liquid Microbes offer immediate activation and rapid results, making them perfect for systems requiring quick adjustments or immediate microbial replenishment. Liquid microbes are the perfect candidate for automatic dosing using a peristaltic pump.

The Challenges

Microbial wastewater treatment offers significant benefits but comes with challenges that require careful management. Maintaining a hospitable environment—such as pH, temperature, and oxygen levels—is critical, as deviations can reduce microbial efficiency. Additionally, wastewater streams containing toxic compounds, such as heavy metals or disinfectants, can inhibit or kill microbial populations, necessitating pre-treatment. Variations in influent quality or sudden spikes in organic loading can also overwhelm microbial systems, leading to imbalances and incomplete treatment.

Other challenges can include managing the byproduct of microbial activity, such as excess sludge, which requires disposal, and addressing issues like foaming or odors, particularly in anaerobic systems. Microbial systems often require a start-up phase to establish stable populations, which can delay optimal performance. Despite these challenges, proper monitoring  and system design, alongside system design tailored solutions such as ClearBlu’s microbes, can effectively overcome these obstacles, ensuring efficient and sustainable wastewater treatment.

Turning Challenges Into Opportunities

ClearBlu Environmental addresses the challenges of microbial wastewater treatment through innovative solutions and expert system design. To maintain ideal conditions for microbial activity, ClearBlu integrates advanced monitoring and control systems that regulate pH, temperature, and oxygen levels as well as delivers proper dissolved oxygen levels to the entire water column.

ClearBlu provides pre-treatment solutions like 3-phase separators and waterfall screens designed to remove dirt and solids. Removing dirt improves the overall efficiency, especially if there is a lot of it. Removing solids makes the job of the microbes much easier and saves money on pH chemicals in the long-run.

Additionally, ClearBlu minimizes sludge production through efficient microbial blends and offers long-term treatment options, such as aquaculture tables, which provide consistent microbial dosing. We have had success in digesting down and reducing the existing sludge layer using our microbubble aerating and high strength microbes. By combining cutting-edge technology with tailored microbial products, ClearBlu ensures reliable, efficient, and sustainable wastewater treatment even in the most challenging environments.
